Nostalgia Exhibition

This is so exciting for me as I’ve been working with Jez  as a hairstylist and make-up artist for over 5 years now. It was through Jez’s pin-up shoots that I really got to get creative with hair and practise and hone my vintage hair styling skills. As this exhibition will focus on classic Hollywood style, we have been very busy over the last few weeks creating some stunning black and white images (plus a few colour images) reminiscent of old Hollywood studio portraiture.

We decided on ‘Nostalgia’ as the exhibition name as it covers everything this exhibition is about, and chose the stunning image Jez took (above) of gorgeous pin-up model October Divine as our poster image. Shot over a year ago and heavily influenced by images of Veronica Lake, it signalled the new direction we have taken with our work, away from the brightly coloured pin-up images (which we still love!) and towards a more dramatic look inspired by film noir. Below is just a taste of what you can expect to see at the Nostalgia exhibition.

As part of the exhibition we decided to offer shoot packages so people could contribute and help us raise funds to put on the show. This became especially important when Jez’s camera broke mid-shoot a few weeks ago! We wanted the people buying the shoots to receive something really special so in return for the £100 fee, as well as a hair and make-up look created by me, participants also got the chance to gain lots of tips and tricks for creating the look (never be afraid to ask for advice while you are in my chair!) The package also includes shooting with Jez at a discounted rate plus 5 edited images, the final one of which we print, frame and hang in the exhibition and then, after the it’s is over, it’s yours to take home and keep!

We were very lucky that two awesome venues offered to host our fundraising shoot days. The first was held at the fab Animal Studios in May and was really fun. Animal Studios is a vibrant production facility and exhibition space right in the heart of Bedford’s town centre, check out their facebook page here. On the day I created a unique look with each person’s hair, make-up and accessories and then Jez took over for the shoot. The whole thing took a little over an hour per person. I even joined in on the day and had my portrait taken, so look out for my face in amongst everyone else’s! Below are a few pics from the day and a big thanks to the Animal team for having us!

The next shoot took place last Sunday at the very cool Maximo Learn on Harpur Street in Bedford. Maximo is an awesome business hire venue with a twist! They kindly gifted us the space for two shoots and if you take a look at the pics below you’ll see why I was so excited to use it; all the rooms are themed!!! The girls were fantastic hosts and had even arranged for a professional behind the scenes photographer to capture it all, so I look forward to sharing those pictures with you in another post. A big thanks to both Sarah and Sianne for all their help and I look forward to returning there on the 31st for our next shoot! Check out Maximo on Instagram here.

I finally remembered to take some before and after shots too, to show how different a vintage makeover can make you look! If you fancy booking in for one of our shoot packages then you are in luck as we’ve added an extra date to accommodate more people. This extra shoot day will take place on Sunday, June 14th. To book your place just email Jez on brown.jez@gmail.com and put ‘Nostalgia Fundraising Shoot’ in the title.

As a further run up to the event, I shall be running two workshops. One is a Pin-up Workshop at the Three Cups pub on Thursday June 18th,  and you can email me on sarahsdoowopdos@gmail.com to book your place. Another workshop on ‘Hollywood Hair’ will run during the exhibition week and details for this will announced in the next few weeks. We are also holding an incredible photo-shoot raffle but for news on that you’ll have to check back in the next few days 😉doowopdo-signiture
